Akershus university hospital (AHUS) is a teaching hospital with 515 somatic beds and 196 psychiatric beds. 4000 people are employed at the hospital and it is located near the capital of Norway, Oslo. The ICU has a combined surgical and medical expertise and has about 350 admissions per year with maximum capacity of ten patients at the time, divided in 3 single rooms, one specially designed for infectious diseases, and 4 double rooms. The ICU alone has 78 employees, and approximately 80% of the nurses are specially trained ICU nurses. We have a wide variety of nationalities working with us. Poland, Germany and Finland together with the Scandinavian countries are represented at the unit. 3 anaesthetists have permanent employment with us. To achieve continuity for the patients we have created 5 primary groups who will only look after maximum of two patients at one given time.In the off duty there are allocated 6 days a year organised for learning, 3 days in spring and 3 days in the autumn. The subjects are the same for every primary group set by the management, according to the staffs' needs and wishes. We use medical equipment such as Evita respirator, Marquette observation equipment and Prisma for hemo dialysis.Measured observations from Marquette and Evita comes straight into the computer continuously in a programme called Metavision, no manual registration is necessary. Also all nursing reports and activities are logged electronically in Metavision. Metavision is specially designed for the ICU.
