The 16 bed Intensive Care Unit consits of an aseptic and a septic ward 6 bed apiece and 4 isolation rooms.

Educational activity

The Unit is an accredited clinical training site for different levels of  nursing education (critical care nurses, general nurses, infection controll nurses).

The hospital works in Matrix system,  includes Emergency  Department includes emergency,   12 bedded ICU, Operating theatre , anaesthesiology  6 bedded neuro-intensive , VIP units.
Surgical Department includes abdominal, vascular, plastic, ear-throat, gynaecology, ophthalmology profiles with 5 nursing units.
Internal Department includes general internal, cardiology, CCU, diabetic, gastro-intestinal, nephrology, chronic, neurology, psychology, pulmonology, oncology   profiles, with 5 nursing units
Other departments: pathology, X-ray, CT, laboratory.

The hospital is in pioneer role of the emergency medicine in Hungary. The  unit was established  in Anglo-American   pattern in 2001. The unit has 1 shock-,  5 examination-, 1 suture room for trauma patient and 10 observation beds. The duty are managed by the leader physician who is anaesthesiologist-intensive therapist specialist and the leader senior nurse who is specially trained in intensive therapy. The triage nurse sorts the incoming patients, putting them  into critical, emergency and urgent order. The duty also  includes  1 more anaesthesiologist-intensive therapist specialist, 1 orthopaedic surgeon specialist,2-3 residents, 1 paramedic, 4 nurses,  2 assistants, and 2 administrative colleagues.  The minor trauma is a part of the emergency unit, was established in May 2004. The GP Surgery of the XI district, and 2 ambulance stations ( National Ambulance Service with 1 paramedic unit, and FŐNIX  Ambulance Service with 2  medic unit )are also situated  on the territory of the unit which are  unique in Hungary.   These ambulances are very helpful when the patients needs to be sent further  to other institutes.

The duty contains different teams, like shock-team ( 1 physician 2 nurses) Code-team (resuscitation all over in the hospital, with 1 physician or paramedic, 1 nurse, 1 assistant ) trauma team ( 1 physician, 1 nurse, 1 assistant) They do their job in a good framework  organized by  the leading physician and nurse.

The number of the incoming patients are more than 100/day. 40 % of this number are  minor trauma, 50 % are internal, 10 % other cases. The hospital does not include paediatric department.   The busiest days are usually on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday when the hospital admits  abdominal surgical patients from all over in Budapest. The most trauma cases also appear on Saturdays. The doctors and the nurses work   in daily and night shifts. Daily shift starts at 7 finishes 19, the night shift is from 19 ‘till next day 7. The emergency department has a great experience to deal with foreign patients and their insurance difficulties. The  most of the members of the staff can speak English or German.

There is a free call-number for the ambulances who can inform the unit if the seriously ill patient is coming, or if they need  a consultation with a specialist by phone. This is just one reason why the unit is very popular among the paramedics and medics. The hospital management organise “open day” for the inhabitants, every year, when the people are showed around  and informed about the “life of the hospital”. The  management  intends to develop  the  major trauma  system within the hospital which will include chest-, and  neuro-surgery as well. In this case the St Imre hospital will  be so called the South- Buda Regional Medical Centre.
